The Garden

Expansion of the growing garden and additional outdoor seating

Integral to our unique curriculum is an awareness of and immersion in the environment, along with a responsibility for its care. Experiential learning forms the basis of much of the Waldorf teaching. Our pupils and teachers maintain our campus grounds, which include a forested area, vegetable patches, polytunnel and a pond, all of which support our biodiversity efforts.

There is work to be done to improve these areas, to make them better learning environments: currently retaining walls are crumbling, an existing small patio requires expansion and outdoor seating is needed.  Increasing the size of the seating area will lead to the garden being used for longer periods of time, particularly for the younger children. It will also be useful as an observation area for bird watching and wildlife monitoring in the grounds.

The growing garden and seating project will have an enormous, positive impact on the well-being of all our pupils and staff in the school,  as a space to connect with nature, building awareness of organic methods of food production, and thus reduce dependency on store-bought food.

What is the ask?

An initial investment of £6,000 will enable us to carry out hard landscaping, rebuild the supporting walls and enlarge the patio to allow it to be used by the entire school population. We will also be able to introduce new native plants, including fruit trees, and create a medicinal plant garden that further links this space and its uses to our curriculum
